What’s Great about the Greeks ?!

cafe

After so many years here, I think I can answer this question, there are many things that make them different and special,  for example:

They do take the sun and the sea for granted, but are more than happy to share it with the rest of the world!

They love having a coffee (from 8 in the morning to 8 at night), and enjoying it for hours and hours and hours…

They can prepare the most delicious meal with just the basics, like bread and olives, and turn it into a feast with music and dancing…

They all speak English and even if they don’t, they will always try to help a stranger..

They do not care about rules and regulations in their own country, but when abroad they know all the street signs and the smoking prohibited warnings..

They love their country more than anything, even if they criticize it all the time.

Family is very important and includes everybody from grand parents to the third cousin’s grand child…

Life takes place outside the house, on the street, on the beach, in the village squares,  the tavernas, the cafeterias.. 24/7,  all year.

They hold on to their traditions without making it look odd or old fashioned.

With History in every ruin and every monument on every corner, it is part of them, integrated in their thoughts and daily life.

Name days are more important than birthdays and most of the population is named after the grandparents, with a small variety of  names, eg  Dimitris, Georgos, Nikos, Giannis, Maria, Eleni …which might then turn up (too) many times within one family.

They are very passionate and love arguing about everything using a great variety of gestures, always making a lot of noise.

Philosophy is part of their DNA, as is tragedy, and comedy…

Attika/Athens/ Aegina

Aegina fruits

One of the best things about Athens is the fact that you can easily escape this busy and noisy city to some of the most beautiful Greek islands in just half an hour!

Aegina in the Saronic Golf is one of them.  A place with history and beauty, from it’s picturesque old town to the temple of Aphaea,  it is the perfect place for a relaxed weekend, enjoying great seafood and a swim in the deep blue sea.

As I spent most of this summer on ships, both, cruise and cargo, travelling to many different ports in 6 different countries, I just want to share some pictures of some of the largest ships in the world and also show some impressions of the navigation bridge and engine room, areas which, due to security reasons are restricted and access is usually not allowed, so enjoy the pictures (in random order) and get back to me for more info or photos.

Think positive!

Statue Base-2

About 25 years ago I was working on a cruise ship and every night one of the performers used to close the show with the same sentence: ” Thank you and THINK POSITIVE”!

At the age of 20 something it didn’t mean much to me, or my colleagues, because we were young, we were free and the world belonged to us!

Getting older and realizing that life is not that easy after all,  I started remembering this sentence  every now and then.

Now, with the crisis that has effected us in Greece and other countries so very much, I think and I say it every day: “THINK POSITIVE!”

But then I get answers like: ” how can I, when there is nothing left of my old life?”  ” when everything I do is for nothing?”  ” when every new day is worse than the one before!”

It’s true, what can I answer? Except for: be strong, be patient and remember: IT IS ALWAYS THE DARKEST BEFORE THE DAWN!
